Around 50 automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.
Officers state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then discovered numerous other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report early analysis suggest the liquid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; authorities are presently not aware of any injuries in relation with the event," they commented.
City officials announced they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for information.
A high-ranking official stated the incident made him without words and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This act hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, referring to the killing of nine people by a shooter targeting people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
