Democrats Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated fury after Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and asserted they should be arrested and sentenced "by death" following their release of a contentious video.

The Message That Sparked the Controversy

The clip, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in military or defense capacities.

"Similar to us, you all made an oath to defend and uphold this national charter," the lawmakers declared in the short video. "Currently, the threats to our democratic foundation don't only come from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can decline improper directives, you can reject improper directives, you must reject illegal orders. No one has to execute commands that contravene the law or our national charter."

Trump's Furious Response

The recorded statement reportedly prompt a furious reply from the ex-president.

On the following morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate post, he declared: "This constitutes really serious, and Harmful to our United States. Their words cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Representatives Answer

Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Democratic leadership released a unified announcement censuring the comments.

"Political violence has no role in America," they declared. "Representatives who participated in the video all acted our nation with exceptional national pride and honor. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and risky threats of violence against congressional representatives, and call on House Republicans to vigorously do the same."

The party representatives also said that they had been in communication with protective services "to ensure the security of these members and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must without delay take down these extreme online messages and retract his violent language before he causes harm," the statement added.

Lawmakers' Defiant Answer

The lawmakers who appeared in the video also issued a declaration.

"We are ex-military personnel and defense specialists who value this country and made an pledge to protect and uphold the founding document of the United States," they declared. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we aim to maintain it. No intimidation, pressure, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that important obligation."

"What's most telling is that the ex-president considers it liable to punishment by death for us to restate the legal requirements," they continued. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their support as they carry out their pledge to the founding principles and duty to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."

They added: "All citizens must unite and condemn the president's calls for our execution and political violence. This is a period for ethical certainty."

Additional Partisan Reactions

The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's comments and published on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is demanding the death of elected officials."

He continued: "This represents an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should condemn this without delay and without qualification."

The Conservative official justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "It is very risky, you have prominent officials of Congress instructing soldiers to disobey orders, I think that represents without precedent in the nation's past."

The GOP official also according to sources told media outlets that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "defining the crime of treason" but that "lawyers have to analyze the language and determine all that."

White House Statement

During a White House press conference on that day, when asked by a journalist, "Is the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the executive branch representative answered: "Absolutely not."

"It's important to note about what the president is reacting to," the official declared. "You have sitting members of the American legislature who worked together to arrange a video message to personnel of the US military, to active duty service members encouraging them to ignore the commander in chief's proper directives."

She added: "The sanctity of our defense system relies on the command structure, and if that system is violated, it can lead to casualties, it can lead to disorder, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally promoting."
