The England national team will embark on their Euro 2028 adventure at the the home of Manchester City, assuming they attain the expected entry for a tournament taking place in the majority of the UK and the Irish Republic.
City’s stadium has not welcomed an English men’s game since May 2016, when the visitors were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to stage the Three Lions for their opening fixture on Saturday 10 June 2028.
England are set to play their concluding group fixtures at the national stadium, but, should they win the preliminary round, their knockout stage opener would occur at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Placing second would mean starting the playoffs at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The tournament was inaugurated at an event in central London on the previous evening. Senior figures from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were barracked as they entered the location by about 50 protesters, who called for the Israeli team to be expelled from international football because of the Gaza crisis.
Banners were displayed with slogans reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
The inaugural fixture of Euro 2028 will be played at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a game that will include the Welsh team if they secure a place.
Wembley will host the penultimate rounds and the championship match, which will be played on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at late afternoon.
It is expected that an earlier kick-off, which will also be adopted for European club finals from the following campaign, will appeal to family audiences and help reach a wider spectrum of viewers.
The Republic of Ireland are set to play their first game at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would follow suit at Hampden Park.
All four host countries’ teams will take part in the qualification process; two automatic spots will be held in reserve for any that miss out on the finals through the standard process.
Villa Park and The North London arena finalize the event’s nine venues. All will hold at least one knockout match, with the last eight staged at each country’s national stadium.
The qualifying draw will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was removed as a venue city last year when it became clear the proposed venue could not be upgraded in time, on a date in late 2026.
“This will be a competition for the supporters and a celebration of everything we cherish about the game – its emotion and power to unite individuals.”
In excess of three million passes, a all-time high for a UEFA European Championship, are projected to be offered to attendees.
