The accused confessed to 17 criminal counts at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week

A man who contaminated sweets with sleeping medication and gave them to youngsters at a summer camp in Leicestershire has confessed to sexual crimes against two children who were between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight minors and an older person experienced illness at Stathern Lodge in mid-summer.

The elderly man, from that region, admitted guilt to a series of 17 offences when he appeared at the judicial center on the end of the week.

Yet, he disputed a single sexual charge he was facing, which was involving a young boy.

Ruben was remanded in custody ahead of a additional proceeding on late November.

'Sweet game'

The prosecutor, presenting evidence, outlined Ruben's offending to the judicial body.

She said his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were staying at a youth camp which he operated.

The man played a "treat game" with the youngsters, Mrs Prior said, in which he would go into the sleeping quarters when they were settling down and ask them to eat sweets "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings Ruben had played this game with the children "for many years", and minors had previously become sick the subsequent day.

She said the defendant had been able to explain this over a long period as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepchild had suspicions in July 2025.

The prosecutor stated further: "This year his stepson had suspicions about the activities, justifiably.

"They chose" to investigate in the individual's items."

The prosecutor stated materials including infant oil, Vaseline and medical needles were discovered, and his stepson notified the law enforcement about his worries.

She said the defendant proceeded to engage in the "treat game" with six youngsters that evening - July 26th - and they were all sick the following morning.

"Authorities" had not gone out by that time," she stated further.

The regulatory agency, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was reviewing law enforcement's management of the incident.

The legal representative explained the minors were unable to walk properly due to being ill, so Ruben's stepson notified the law enforcement again.

She stated the defendant then played the "candy game" in a room of five children.
