Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
New York police shared video stills Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries according to reports.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he attends every game. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with New York in March.
