Inter striker Lautaro Martínez scored a second-half double to secure his team a 2-0 victory at Pisa, keeping the visitors very much engaged in the Serie A title race despite a less than convincing performance.
Under manager Cristian Chivu, Inter now are placed third in the table with 27 points total, tied with second-placed Roma and just one point adrift of table-toppers Milan. In contrast, Pisa hold the 18th position with 10 points.
Inter arrived in Tuscany looking to return to winning ways after enduring a loss to rivals by Milan last weekend, followed by a European defeat at Atlético Madrid. However, they were made to battle all the way by newly-promoted Pisa. The hosts created plenty of opportunities, but a efficient Inter broke the deadlock in the 69th minute when Argentine Martínez smacked a first-time shot into the top of the net. The forward then finished from close range seven minutes from time.
Inter’s ability to convert despite difficult circumstances was decisive in earning the victory.
In Spain, Real Sociedad staged a dramatic fightback from 2-0 down to equalize at home against Villarreal, only to succumb to a goal five minutes into added time. Villarreal’s scoring came from Ayoze Pérez shortly after the half-hour mark and Alberto Moleiro in the 57th minute, but Carlos Soler quickly pulled one back and Ander Barrenetxea leveled the score three minutes from time. Yet, Moleiro delivered the final say late in stoppage time.
Later on La Liga fixture, Real Madrid travel to Girona needing a win to go back to the top above Barcelona, who secured a 3-1 win over Alavés on Saturday.
