New Year's Partygoers Advised to Bundle Up with Snow Forecast Across the UK

Forecasters are reporting a chilly beginning to the new year, with snowfall anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Go Ahead Despite Forecasts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay events are planned to take place, unlike last year's postponement. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," noted the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. The mercury are forecast to be cold, so additional clothing essential, said forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for Friday

As we enter Friday, weather warnings are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Expected to Drop Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to plummet as snowfall and high winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Advisories Issued

At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities said this signified the weather was likely to lead to notable consequences across medical and care provision. This encompasses a likely increase in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
