New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that was a central issue throughout his run for office.
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors since the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central policy, did not confirm he would live there right away following his electoral win in November.
"My choice rested on keeping my family safe and the need to focusing all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers supported," stated Mamdani on Monday.
His home was in Astoria, Queens, a district famous for its vibrant immigrant populations and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for showing us the best of New York City," he expressed.
"While I may no longer live there, the community will continue to reside within me and my efforts as mayor," he added.
During his campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his opponents, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the apartment despite the fact that he is from a prominent family.
Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a place for official events, and championed a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his previous Astoria apartment.
With its pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Inside, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished to reflect the home's historical period.
The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city regulates on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
Tenants see such units as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses outpaces what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
