The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any major prize-giving event nears, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
