Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about following this charming family go about their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
