President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that he has invited the family of a Guard member tragically killed last week to come to the White House.
He noted that he spoke to her parents and they were “deeply grieving”.
Soldier Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was killed in a shooting on last Wednesday in Washington DC.
Her fellow service member, Andrew Wolfe, twenty-four years old, remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Memorials across the state have occurred in their remembrance.
The president said he’s proposed a visit to the White House for the loved ones of both soldiers of the West Virginia Guard.
“I told them: ‘When you’re ready, because that’s a difficult moment, arrive at the White House. We’re going to pay tribute to her,” Trump addressed reporters. “And similarly with Andrew, no matter the outcome.”
Mourners gathered over the weekend at Webster County high school in West Virginia to honor Sarah.
Both the soldiers had been serving with the state guard as part of Trump’s national effort to assist public safety in the capital.
“Sarah was the kind of student that teachers hoped for. She carried herself with quiet strength, a warm expression and a positive energy that encouraged people around her,” the principal, the leader of her former high school, informed the media. “She was caring, considerate and always ready to help others.”
Memorial details for Sarah are yet to be finalized.
Law enforcement have charged a 29-year-old suspect with a charge of homicide and two counts of assault with intent to kill while carrying a weapon.
The event caused the Trump administration to suspend asylum processing and halt providing entry permits to possessors of Afghan passports.
Andrew Wolfe, a resident of Martinsburg, began his service in early 2019 and is a 2019 graduate of Musselman high school, as reported by the news agency.
He is still undergoing care and is “battling to survive”, the state’s leader the governor said on a news program.
The state’s top lawyer the attorney general informed Fox News Sunday that she also intended to meet with his relatives.
Beckstrom, from her hometown, completed her education from Webster County High in 2023 and joined the military shortly after, serving as a military police officer with honor, according to the military.
“She had a lot of kindness and she absolutely had bravery,” the governor addressed the crowd at the service. “Though her time ended too soon, she has made an impact that’s going to last forever.”
