This Swine Life: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.

It might not have been at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.

“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.

“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future without fear.”

The event, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was established to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.

The pig, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “6-7” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The craze became so widespread that a major dictionary recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.

A Peaceful Retirement

This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.

“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to begin the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.

“It captures the essence of Miami: joyful, varied, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Each year, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”

Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
