White House Reveals Federal Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark

The White House disclosed the start of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by the public and vowed to contest the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver critical services to the public nationwide,” said a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended soon.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, unions sought a court injunction to prevent the government from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge ordered the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

An analysis contended that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the administration to carry out firings, citing official advice that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs took place on the same day that federal workers got only a incomplete payment covering the end of September but not the start of October, since funding expired at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our federal operations running,” Stier said. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
